Introduction
What a forbidding place! The journey is harrowing but the dive
site is good. Diving is free but you do need permission to dive
there - phone the warden on 0194 6726296. Max depth is said to
be 76 meters.
Services
Some parking, otherwise none. Lovely scenery.
How to get there
There are several ways to get there, the most popular is across
the top of Lake Windermere to Ambleside on the A592 and then
across the across the Wrynose and Hardknott Pass via the A593.
Be warned though, you need a good map, a good car with good brakes
and good weather to cross it safely.
There are some very 'hair-raising' turns and drops. Also it
is quite elevated so bear that in mind if you return this way
after a dive.
The pictures were taken from the pinnacles entry
point, (marked 'P' on the map). |
Diving
Visibility is brilliant (20m +) but there is little to see,
other than other divers. It is deep, the maximum recorded depth
is about 73m and the silt can be kicked up very easily so be
careful.
The seems to be two popular dives here, the pinnacles and the
bomber.
The main dive is the pinnacles, enter the water and follow the
blue rope for about 150m to the top of the pinnacles which is
about 13.5m deep. At the top there are a number of plaques commemorating
some late divers. You can then descend down the pinnacles. The
bottom was reported to be about 46m but other reports suggest
it is much deeper. There is supposed to be gnome garden at the
bottom.
The second dive is at the SW end where apparently a WWII bomber
crashed. The depth at this end is about 10m. I have seen the
tail plane and the engine block but other than that nothing! |
