MCS march on Westminster
The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) is calling on divers to turn out in force at Westminster on the morning of Wednesday 10 October in support of Marine Bill.
'We will all meet at the London Aquarium from where we will walk in our dive kit (minus tanks) over Westminster Bridge to the Houses of Parliament and pose for press photos,' MCS policy officer Melissa Moore told DIVE. 'A representative from MCS, WWF, RSPB and The Wildlife Trusts will then deliver our petitions and postcards to 10 Downing Street.'
Divers can register by email at info@mcsuk.org with 'Westminster' as subject matter or phone MCS on 01989 566017.
Basking shark plea following death
Conservationists have appealed to the public to keep their distance from basking sharks after one was found dead and one injured off the Cornish coast. The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) said a dead basking shark had been found entangled in fishing nets off Sennen Cove
An injured basking shark was also spotted off Porthcurno with its dorsal and tail fins cleanly severed, which experts said had probably been caused by a boat propeller. However, the animal appeared to be behaving normally despite its open wounds according to biologists who photographed the shark.
The MCS said members of the public were ignoring the guidelines set out in the Basking Shark Code of Conduct, produced together with the Shark Trust and The Wildlife Trusts.
'UK law and the basking shark Code of Conduct has been designed to prevent these animals from disturbance and injury,' said Dr Jean-Luc Solandt, biodiversity policy offer of MCS. 'Clearly some people are ignoring the law and sadly it seems this shark has suffered as a result. Anyone witnessing boats deliberately approaching sharks too closely with their engines running should report the incident to the local police.'

BSAC Recognized in EU

Three major BSAC diving qualifications have been accredited by the European Underwater Federation. This means the BSAC ocean diver, dive leader and open water instructor qualifications will now be recognized in all EU countries and worldwide later this year. Inspectors from the European Underwater Federation observed lectures and pool-training activities at Merseyside SAC, as well as an instructor foundation course in Liverpool. All open water sessions for the three courses were also observed at Eccleston Delph Dive Centre.
The federation inspectors described the audit as 'well prepared and extensive' and said it provided ample opportunities to see the implementation of the training of divers and instructors.
'The planning was done very quickly and I am pleased that the program ran so well with such a wonderful outcome,' said Alistair Reynolds of BSAC's diver resources team. 'Our thanks must go to the many members involved in making it such a success.'
