Key Points

You do need to be fairly accurate with your timing if you want to get back to your start point
A good compass and an SMB is essential for this dive. The straits run from NE to SW.

Menai Straits, Anglesey

Introduction

This is an amazing dive, catch the current right and you drift south for about 20 minutes and then drift back north, with a bit of luck you end up right where you started.

Timing is critical though, Slack water is about three hours before Liverpool low water slack. You need to be entering the water about 20 minutes before that. You will drift SW for about 20 minutes, then about 15 minutes of slack and then the current reverses and takes you NE back to the start

On the return journey watch out for the telephone cables (thin purple line on the map) that run across the straits, when you hit them follow them NW towards your entry point.

The straits are teaming with sea life.

Services

None really, car parking for about 4 cars under the bridge. Please be considerate to the locals.

The nearest dive shop is Mike's at Trearrdur Bay.

If you want a second dive try Vivian Quarry, Dorothea or Trearrdur Bay.

Safety

This is the usual entry and exit point (left), just follow the wall down to the water (shot from the Anglesey side) with the Menai bridge above.

You are strongly advised to use a SMB and ground cover. Boat cover is even better. If your timing is out you may end miles away.

We dived it regularly and get an average depth of about 16m in the middle.

How to get there

You can enter Anglesey via either bridge and make your way to the bottom of the Menai bridge (the northern of the two) on the Anglesey side.
